OC Streetcar project is getting pricier

The OC Streetcar project planned to link Santa Ana and Garden Grove is still coming, but it will be a bit late arriving and a chunk more expensive.

Last week the Orange County Transportation Authority’s board of directors approved more funding for the project, raising the total cost to $407.76 million.

That’s an increase of over $100 million. The increased expenses are blamed on higher construction bid prices, inflation and rising material costs.

To pay for the difference, the OCTA board voted to use more Measure M funds raised by the county’s half-cent sales tax for transportation.

The new plan was another step toward getting a nearly $150 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration.

Construction, originally planned to begin this summer, will commence later this year with testing and operations to begin in 2021.
