One dead after a boating accident

TWO PEOPLE are rescued from the water after a boating accident Wednesday night in Huntington Beach.

UPDATE: A man hospitalized in critical condition after a boating accident in Huntington Beach on Wednesday night has died.

According to the Orange County Coroner’s office, the man has been identified as Raymond Hilken, 76, of Huntington Beach.

Authorities report that the deceased and his wife, Barbara Shelby-Hilken, 67, were on board an inflatable boat that crashed into a docked vessel, throwing them both into the water. She was not injured but her husband was hospitalized in critical condition.

The time of death at Huntington Beach Hospital was reported as 11:24 p.m. on Wednesday.


One person is in critical condition after a boating accident in Huntington Harbour on Wednesday night.

According to the Huntington Beach Fire Department, the incident was first reported at 9:39 p.m. near the dock at 16631 Carousel Lane.  Upon arrival, personnel from Engine 47 found three people at the scene: two Good Samaritans and one victim from the boat.

Another victim was unaccounted for and still in the water.

Two HBPD firefighters went into the water and searched, later joined by the Marine Safety Dive Team, Huntington Beach Police Department and Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The missing victim – as yet unidentified – was found in the water and was treated immediately before being taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The other was treated and released at the scene.

Orange County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.
