It’s the week of the changing of the guard.
City councils in Garden Grove, Stanton and Westminster will be swearing in new council members, welcoming incumbent victors and saying goodbye to retiring colleagues this coming week.
The Garden Grove City Council will meet on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and will have one new face: George Brietigam. He will take the oath of office as the new councilman for District 1 (West Grove), succeeding Kris Beard.
Also raising their right hands will be re-elected council members Phat Bui and Thu-Ha Nguyen, along with Mayor Steve Jones.
The “new” council will also elect a mayor pro tempore. The meeting will be held at 11300 Stanford Ave.
Also on Tuesday, the Stanton City Council will meet to swear-in and seat council members elected on Nov. 6. David Shawver will be the city’s first directly-elected mayor; “new” council members will be Rigoberto Ramirez and Gary Taylor.
This is the first year that Stanton’s municipal elections are under a by-district structure for council members. The “new” council will also elect a mayor pro tem. The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. at 7800 Katella Ave.
The Westminster City Council will meet at 7 p.m. to seat a new governing panel. Taking the oath of office will be re-elected Mayor Tri Ta and new council members Chi “Charlie” Nguyen and Tai Do.
A recognition ceremony will honor outgoing Margie Rice, who has served as mayor and council member for many years. The meeting is at 8200 Westminster Blvd.
Missing will be Tyler Diep, the former vice mayor, who was elected to the 72nd state Assembly District seat on Nov. 6.
A new vice mayor will be chosen by the new council.
