TWO PEOPLE jumped to safety but six cats perished in a fire early Thursday morning in Garden Grove (GGFD photo from video).

Two people jumped from the second floor of an apartment complex to flee a fire in Garden Grove early Thursday morning.

They survived, but six cats perished in the blaze reported at 3 a.m. in the 13330 block of El Prado Avenue, northeast of Haster Street and Garden Grove Boulevard.

According to Capt. Thanh Nguyen of the Garden Grove Fire Department, arriving firefighters saw a woman hanging from a second-story window in the four-unit building. They tried to reach her, but she let go of her grip. Her husband had jumped before her.

Neither suffered any significant injury, but both were treated for smoke inhalation and were in stable condition at a local hospital.

It took over 50 firefighters about a half-hour to knock down the blaze.

Eight cats were pulled from the fire, but only two survived. The fire started on the first floor and spread to the apartment above. The pair, which leaped to escape the blaze, had been awakened by a smoke alarm. Their bedroom door was closed, which helped slow the spread of smoke.

Twelve people were displaced by the fire, and the Red Cross was called to provide assistance to them. The damage was estimated at $600,000 to the structure and $60,000 to contents.

According to Capt. Thanh, the cause of the fire was determined to be accidental, with “smoking material not able to be ruled out.”
