THE SURF LEAGUE boys’ basketball season ended with a four-way tie for first, So now we have the playoff before the playoffs.
The splitting of the Sunset League into two four-team leagues promised the possibility of some unexpected results.
Well, that happened on Wednesday when all four teams finished as co-champs of the Surf League with 3-3 records.
Los Alamitos High defeated Edison 60-45 and Newport Harbor’s earlier 54-29 victory over city rival Corona del Mar tied everyone up. Being co-champs is nice, but the league is only guaranteed two CIF-SS playoff spots, so a kind of “second league” season will now ensue to pick the lucky two.
Marina High will host those games today (Thursday) with CDM vs. Newport (again), followed by Edison-Los Alamitos (again).
The other four-team grouping, the Wave League, finished a little more typically. With Marina’s 45-30 win over Laguna Beach, the Vikings (5-1 in league, 16-12 overall) are the champs, with the Breakers (4-2, 12-15) in second.
Here are Wednesday’s high school basketball scores:
BOYS
- Huntington Beach 77, Fountain Valley 74
- Los Alamitos 60, Edison 45
- Pacifica Christian 70, Orangewood Academy
- Marina 45, Laguna Beach 30
GIRLS

- Orange 28, Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana 18.
The Surf League will play tiebreaker games at Marina High on Thursday to determine which teams will receive the league’s two guaranteed playoff spots. Corona del Mar will play Newport Harbor at 5:30 p.m. followed by Edison-Los Alamitos at 7 p.m.
