Are you a resident of Stanton and ever thought you could be a good member of the city council? Your opportunity to serve might be coming up.

At the Feb. 12 meeting of the Stanton City Council, a decision was made to create a council committee to screen candidates to fill a seat to be vacated by Mayor Pro Tem Alexander “Al”  Ethans.

First elected to the council in 1996, Ethans has informed the city clerk he will be resigning his post effective Feb. 28.  He has served as a council member, mayor and mayor pro tem during his time on the council. Previously he had been on the city planning commission.

Instead of holding a special election, the council picked a committee to consist of council members Rigoberto Ramirez and Carol Warren to examine the applications and make a recommendation to the full council.

According to City Clerk Patricia Vazquez, application forms for prospective candidates are expected to be available soon; deadlines and other information about the process will be publicized. Candidates must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of Stanton.

Consideration of the committee’s recommendations will be on the agenda for the April 9 city council meeting. The term will run through November 2020.
