After the Bolsa Grande boy’s volleyball team swept Camarillo High in three games on Tuesday night at the Matador gym, coach Rebecca Young mused on just how far the Garden Grove League champs can go in the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs.

“Depends on who shows up,” she said. “If my good team shows up … we’ll see. We’ll see. I like to play one game at a time.”

Against the Scorpions, the third place team from the Coastal Canyon League, the Mats played well, but so did the visitors. Although Bolsa swept all three games, they were relatively close throughout.

“I thought my guys came out and played very well,” she said. “I was really impressed by the other team and their skills. I told my guys to bring their ‘A’ game and they did. I’m really proud of them.”

The Matadors won the tight first contest 25-22, and looked to have a blowout in the second, pulling out to an eight-point lead at 18-10. But the Scorps battled back and closed to within three at 19-16 before finally succumbing 25-18.

In the final battle, the visitors led through most of the early going, building a three-point lead and leading 21-20 late in the game before Peter Troung asserted himself at the net and the Matadors scored five of the final six points.

Bolsa is now 18-2 and advances to the second round on Thursday against Murrieta Valley (27-7), which swept Laguna Hills. If the Mats win that one, they will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.
