Josh Vogel’s home run in the sixth inning was the difference in Huntington Beach High’s 2-1 victory Friday afternoon over Aliso Niguel in a CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinal contest.
The Oilers, now 25-6 and ranked 21st in the nation by Maxpreps.com, now advance to the semifinals on Tuesday against Harvard-Westlake (26-5-1). If the orange-and-black prevail, the championship finals are planned for Saturday, May 18.
In addition to Vogels’s crucial dinger, HBHS got a key stop in the seventh when Josh Hahn was able to strand a Wolverine baserunner at second.
Other local baseball teams in quarterfinal play didn’t do quite as well. In Division 3 action, Ocean View was edged 2-1 by La Canada. The Seahawks, champs of the Golden West League, finished the season 23-11.
In Division 4, Loara lost 5-0 to Kennedy High of La Palma. The Saxons won the Garden Grove League title in their first season in the GGL and finished with a log of 19 wins and eight losses.
