Cavs, Saxons face off for GGL title

SANTIAGO can win the GGL football title outright with a win over Loara this week (Shutterstock).

A fistful of football titles will be on the table this week, along with that bag of candy.

In the Garden Grove League, first place Santiago can nail down the championship with a win over Loara on Thursday at Glover Field in Anaheim.

The Cavs are 6-3 overall and 4-0 in the GGL. The Saxons are 7-2 and 3-1. A win by Santiago would leave it alone in first, while a win by Loara would likely result in a three-way tie among Santiago, Loara and Rancho Alamitos (if the Vaqueros defeat La Quinta, as expected).

The Cavaliers are led by Bernardo Monroy, their senior quarterback. He’s passed for 1157 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with five interceptions.  His favorite targets are Abraham Saldana with 543 yards and six TDs, and Jose Villa with 484 yards and five TDs.  Each has 27 catches.

On the ground, the top rusher is Derrick Martin with 840 yards and seven touchdowns.

In the Big 4 League, Marina has clinched at least a tie for the title with its win last week over Segerstrom. It can win the crown outright by defeating Garden Grove Thursday night at Monsoor Stadium.

Pacifica could claim a piece of the Empire League championship if the Mariners could upset unbeaten Cypress on Thursday at Bolsa Grande.
