LQ Aztec softball team wins a pair

La Quinta High’s softball team is off to a fast start. The Aztecs are 2-0 after a pair of wins in the Savanna Tournament.

Again Century, the blue-and-gold prevailed 5-3. Ally Guzman got the win as pitcher, striking out nine batters. Freshman Karen Dam had a double, a stolen base and a RBI, playing in her first-ever softball game.

Guzman ran her record to 2-0 as LQHS rolled past Samueli Academy 15-1. She also had three hits. Xochiti Esparza went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and scored twice.

Seven teams impress off the bat

Seven local teams are mentioned in the reseason polls for spring sports were disclosed earlier this week. Here are the local teams ranked and recognized.

BASEBALL

• Division 1: Huntington Beach is seventh.

• Division 6: Orange is seventh and Garden Grove is eighth.

SOFTBALL (watchlist)

• Division 1: Huntington Beach.

• Division 2: Edison.

• Division 4: Loara, Santiago/Garden Grove.
