Across the Area

Good weather, a good dog and more

HARRISON FORD with Buck in “The Call of the Wild.”

It feels great outside. Take a walk along the beach, ride your bike or at least take a moment to breathe in the (mostly) fresh air.

WEATHER … It will be another springlike week in February with high temps bouncing from low 70s to high 60s and back again. Ten percent chance of rain Wednesday and Friday but otherwise mostly sunny (or partly cloudy).

ENTERTAINMENT … Opening Friday is a production of “Mary Poppins, The Broadway Musical,” at the Rose Center Theater in Westminster with performances on select Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through March 8.

In the movie theaters, among the new releases showing locally will be “The Call of the Wild,” a new telling of Jack London’s tale of adventure in the great white north. Harrison Ford stars along with a CGI version of good dog Buck. Rated PG.

Also in your local cinema will be “Fantasy Island,” where dreams can turn into nightmares. Rated PG-13.

SPORTS … As the week begins, three local high school sports teams are still alive in the CIF-SS playoffs. Orangewood Academy is in the girls D-2AA basketball tournament. Marina is in D-6 girls’ water polo and Edison is in D-1 girls’ soccer. Go Spartans, Vikings and Chargers!

The Anaheim Ducks will return to Honda Center on Wednesday to host the Florida Panthers, then take on the Colorado Avalanche on Friday.

MEETINGS … The Huntington Beach City Council meets on Tuesday at 6 p.m … Garden Grove’s planning commission meets on Thursday 7 p.m. to consider a new site plan for the two-hotel “Site C” project on Harbor Boulevard.

HOLIDAYS … Sort of, Monday is “President’s Day,” which means most schools and banks will be closed. The real holiday should be on Saturday, with George Washington’s Birthday. Thanks, George, for the independence and all.
