D. Nguyen in 2nd for 72d AD seat

Garden Grove City Councilmember Diedre Thu-Ha Nguyen has pulled ahead of incumbent Tyler Diep into second place in the race for the seat representing the 72nd Assembly District.

According to the Orange County Registrar of Voters, at the end of day on Friday, Democrat Nguyen was 778 votes ahead of Diep, a Republican. She is a first-term council member representing District 3. He was a member of the Westminster City Council before being elected to the Assembly seat in 2018.

The top two vote-getters, regardless of party, will contest the seat in November.

Former state senator Janet Nguyen, a Republican, led all candidates with about a third of the vote. Ballots remaining to be tallied countywide are 2,749.

Here are the totals, as of Friday evening.

  • Janet Nguyen 39,493 (33.89 percent).
  • Diedre Thu-Ha Nguyen 29,683 (25.47 percent).
  • Tyler Diep 28,905 (24.80 percent).
  • Bijan Mohseni 18,465 (15.84 percent).
