Athletic success doesn’t always coincide with academic achievement, but it certainly does at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach.

On Tuesday, the CIF-SS released its list of Academic Awards winners for the 2019-2020 high school sports year and the Seahawks were honored 16 times.

To be considered, teams must have a minimum of five student athletes with a minimum of 3.0 grade point average  (on a 4.0 scale). The teams with the highest GPA are awarded the top honors. Other teams with high scores are noted as honorable mention awardees.

OVHS was the top school in The Tribune’s coverage area of Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster to be honored. Entries are submitted by the schools and not verified by the CIF-SS.

Here are Ocean View’s winners.

  • Alyson Nguyen and Nathan Santy of OVHS were named as Athletes of the Year.
  • The OV boys’ golf team, with a 3.91 GPA, was honored as the first place winner in its category of schools with an enrollment of 1,499 and under.
  • Honorable mention awards went to Ocean View’s baseball, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, boys’ cross country, girls’ golf, girls’ soccer, softball, girls’ swimming, boys’ tennis, girls’ tennis, girls’ track and field, boys’ water polo and girls’ water polo.
