Surf is not up on July 4, at least not in Huntington Beach.

At an emergency meeting today (Wednesday), the city council voted to reverse previously announced plans for Independence Day and ordered all city beaches closed on that day.

Also closed will be beaches in Sunset Beach and Huntington Harbour, along with the city pier.

According to Catherine Jun, assistant to the city manager, “The closures are intended to be proactive measures to enforce social distancing “ in the face of marked increases in both cases and deaths in Orange County due to COVID-19.

Oliver Chi, city manager, was also authorized to work with the administration of other Orange County beaches to determine if closures on July 3 and 5 would be necessary.

Laguna Beach has already announced it would close its beaches on July 4, as has Seal Beach.
