Rider killed in crash with pole

A SANTA ANA man was killed when he rode his Vespa scooter into a utility pole in Huntington Beach (Shutterstock).

UPDATE: The Orange County Coroner’s office on Sunday identified the man killed when his scooter struck a utility pole in Huntington Beach as Tommy Duong, 30, of Santa Ana.

A 30-year-old Santa Ana man was fatally injured Friday night when the scooter he was riding struck a utility pole in Huntington Beach.

According to Motor Sgt. Matthew Austin of the HBPD, the incident took place around 7:48 p.m. in the area of Brookhurst Street, south of Effingham Drive. Arriving police found the body of a man who had been thrown from his 2007 black Vespa after striking the pole. The rider suffered extensive injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
