A grim milestone was passed on Tuesday as the Orange County Health Care Agency reported that 19 more deaths from COVID-19 were recorded, bring the cumulative total past 1,000 to 1,007.

Otherwise the news on the coronavirus pandemic is encouraging. The two most important metrics to allow for the OC to move from “widespread” tier (purple) to the “substantial” (red) tier held steady.

The test positivity scored was at 5 percent and the daily COVID-19 case per 100,000 population is at 5.6, both within standards for promotion to the less restrictive red band (see chart at right).

Three hundred seventeen new coronavirus cases were reported, bringing that to-date total to 49,142, of which 42,375 are considered to be recovered. Two hundred ninety-five cases are hospitalized, with 89 of those in intensive care units.
