A man fleeing from pursuing Orange County sheriff’s deputies was fatally shot Friday afternoon in Stanton.

According to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the incident took place at about 5:20 p.m.  A sheriff’s deputy on patrol spotted a stolen vehicle near the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Chapman Avenue at 5:15 p.m.  It had been reported stolen from Garden Grove.

A traffic stop was attempted, but the vehicle moved away on a “short high-speed” pursuit that ended near the area of Dale and Cerritos avenues. The driver of the fleeing car was fatally shot. Deputies rendered medical aid to the driver, who was identified only as a male Asian in his 30s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cerritos Avenue was blocked from Dale Avenue to Yana Drive for several hours.

The investigation of the shooting will be conducted by the Orange County District Attorney’s office, as is protocol. The OCSD will conduct an administrative investigation.
