Public health officials caution against reading too much into daily tallies. The key metrics that classify counties into “tiers” is based on the twin metrics of test positivity percent and number of positive cases per 100,000. Each of those is computed using a seven-day average with a seven-day lag, and they are updated each Tuesday.

The national and international tallies include these statistics posted Sunday by Johns Hopkins University:

  • The number of global cases of COVID-19 is at 37,379,320, of which 7,761,547 are in the United States, followed by India (7,053,806) and Brazil (5,094,979).
