New COVID cases up, deaths fall

Sunday’s coronavirus statistics for Orange County showed an increase in new cases and a decline in deaths.

According to the county health care agency, there were 233 cases, compared to 164 on Saturday. One death was reported, down from eight in the previous day’s tally.

Hospitalizations from COVID-19 infections were at 181, up from 148. Cases in intensive care units were reported at 55, down from 58.

Public health officials caution against reading too much into daily tallies. The key metrics that classify counties into tiers is based on the twin metrics of test positivity percent and number of positive cases per 100,000. Each of those is computed using a seven-day average with a seven-day lag, and they are updated each Tuesday.

Here is a list of the Orange County cities with the most cases. Deaths are in parentheses.

  • Santa Ana: 11,588 (317)
  • Anaheim: 10,275 (319)
  • Garden Grove: 3,294 (109)
  • Orange: 2,783 (71)
  • Huntington Beach: 2,636 (86).

Westminster has 1,175 cases and 31 deaths. Stanton has 277 cases and 17 deaths.
