Coronavirus statistics for Orange County continue to move up and down, according to Thursday’s report for the county health care agency.

New cases of COVID-19 dropped to 295 infections from 335 on Wednesday, but the rest of the metrics were less encouraging.

The number of new deaths rose from two on Wednesday to six on Thursday. Hospitalizations tied to the virus were reported to also increase, from 244 to 251. Cases in intensive care units climbed from 83 to 89.

Public health officials caution against reading too much into daily tallies. The key metrics that classify counties into tiers is based on the twin metrics of test positivity percent and number of positive cases per 100,000. Each of those is computed using a seven-day average with a seven-day lag, and they are updated each Tuesday.
