After a two-day string of declining numbers of new coronavirus cases, the nationwide surge in COVID-19 cases showed up strong in Monday’s report from the Orange County Health Care Agency.

The latest tally from the OCHCA revealed 1,554 new positive cases, more than double Sunday’s count of 552. That’s a new high, greater than the 1,169 cases reported on Friday, Nov. 20.

However, the OCHCA cautions that maintenance of the computer systems at the California Department of Public Health may have resulted in an undercount of the weekend’s cases.

Deaths declined from three to zero, but hospitalizations went from 380 on Sunday to 428 on Monday. Cases in intensive care units rose from 91 to 105.

To date, the total number of coronavirus cases in the county is 71,116, of which 58,102 are judged to be recovered. Total deaths are 1,554.
