Good and bad news on COVID-19

Three of the five metrics about concerning Orange County’s status in coronavirus pandemic showed improvement in Sunday’s report from the county health care agency.

The number of cases – although still high – declined from 2,045 on Sunday to 1,964 on Monday. Deaths dropped from 15 to zero.

However, hospitalizations from COVID-19 rose from 848 to 877, and corona patients in intensive care units increased from 209 to 218.

Since the percentage of available ICU bed is the key “trigger” for the “stay at home” order that kicked in at midnight in the Southern California area, the other positive number is that available ICU beds in the region ticked up from 10.3 percent to 10.9. The goal is to have more than 15 percent.

Here is a list of the OC cities with most cases. Deaths are in parentheses.

  • Santa Ana: 17,247 (338)
  • Anaheim: 14,884 (353)
  • Garden Grove: 5,260 (118)
  • Orange: 4,237 (75)
  • Fullerton: 4,220 (118)
  • Huntington Beach: 3,724 (92).

Westminster has 2051 cases and 34 deaths. Stanton has 1,074 cases and 18 deaths.
