Year-end numbers are mixed

Note to readers: According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, Wednesday’s statistics on the coronavirus covered a 30-hour period rather than the usual 24-hour span. Therefore, Thursday’s (today) numbers are significantly lower because some of the data was included in Wednesday’s count.

Also, there will not be any updates on Jan. 1 and 3 due to the New Year’s holiday and scheduled maintenance with the California Department of Public Health. The Jan. 1 statistics will be released on Jan. 2 and updates will go back to their usual schedule on Monday, Jan. 4.

Thursday’s tally of new coronavirus cases and deaths showed a dramatic drop from Wednesday’s numbers. According to the Orange County Health Care Agency, the number of new infections was 610, down from 4,514 the day before. Deaths fell from 27 to one.

Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 declined slightly from 2,145 to 2,128, but the number of coronavirus patients in intensive care units in Orange County hospitalized increased from 479 to 495.

To date, the total number of OC cases is at 157,183, with 89,228 are considered recovered. The death count is at 1,875.

Here is a list of the county cities with the most cases. Deaths are in parentheses.

  • Santa Ana: 29,814 (372)
  • Anaheim: 26,681 (402)
  • Garden Grove: 9,758 (132)
  • Orange: 7,571 (91)
  • Fullerton: 7,026 (132)
  • Huntington Beach: 6,252 (101).

Westminster has 4,237 cases and 43 deaths. Stanton has 1,993 cases and 22 deaths.
