No good news on New Year’s Day

ORANGE COUNTY had higher numbers of coronavorus cases, and patients in intensive care units on New Year’s Day (Shutterstock).

The first day of the new year didn’t have much good news for 2021 for Orange County and coronavirus.

According to the county health care agency, the tally of new cases was at 4,406 for Friday, a big increase from Thursday’s total of 610, but in line with previous days, as numbers approached record highs.

Deaths went from one to 26, but hospitalizations declined from 2128 to 2097. Patients in intensive care units went from 495 to 501. The next update will be on Monday.

Cumulative Orange County cases are at 161,589, of which 91,679 are considered recovered. Cumulative deaths are at 1,901.

  • Santa Ana: 30,710 (376)
  • Anaheim: 27,417 (409)
  • Garden Grove: 10,034 (133)
  • Orange: 7,793 (92)
  • Fullerton: 7,229 (133)
  • Huntington Beach: 6,444 (101)

Westminster has had 4,370 cases and 45 deaths. Stanton has had 2,055 cases and 23 deaths.
