Two Garden Grove residents are scheduled to be arraigned on March 19 on a variety of charges related to their alleged operation of a business devoted solely to the filing false unemployment insurance claims.
According to the Orange County District Attorney’s office, Huy Duc Nguyen, 32, and Mai Dac Som Nguyen, 40, created Nguyen Social Services for their scheme. The district attorney is alleging that they “blatantly advertised” their company’s intentions in Vietnamese to bring people in to file the false claims on their behalf. A kickback fee of $200 to $700 was expected, it’s alleged.
A search warrant was served on the business at 9840 Garden Grove Blvd. in Garden Grove and other locations, including a trailer in Garden Grove. Investigators seized over $300,000 in cash and froze bank accounts connected to the business. They believe the state Employment Development Department was defrauded of about $490,000 by Nguyen Social Services LLC.
They were arrested on Dec. 17. Mai Nguyen has been charged with four felony counts of perjury, four counts of false statement and one felony count of conspiracy to defraud another of property. Mai faces a possible sentence of seven years and eight months in state prison if convicted on all charges.
Huy Nguyen has been charged with one felony count of perjury, one felony count of false statement, and one felony count of conspiracy to defraud another of property. Huy faces a maximum of four years and eight months in state prison if convicted of all charges.
