Two people were killed early Friday morning when a police chase of a speeding truck in Garden Grove ended tragically with a collision that propelled the truck upside down into a backyard swimming pool.
According to Sgt. Mario Martinez of the GGPD, the incident began at 2:12 a.m. when a patrol officer spotted a Dodge Ram truck speeding through the parking lot in the hotel resort area at Harbor Boulevard and Chapman Avenue.
The truck left the lot and exited onto Chapman Avenue, where it sped away. The officer turned on his red lights and siren, seeking to pull the truck over as it moved west on Chapman. The pursuit continued until the truck crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Euclid Street and Orangewood Avenue.
According to the GGPD and the Orange County Fire Authority, the truck then sheared off a fire hydrant, crashed through a block wall and came to rest in the swimming pool of a home. The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The names of drivers have not been released.
