Garden Grove

This time, the rainbow flag is up

Two years ago, the Garden Grove City Council deadlocked over flying the rainbow flag of “gay pride” and a compromise that lit up city’s clock tower in Village Green park was finally approved.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the council, a proposal by Mayor Pro Tem Kim Nguyen to display the multi-colored banner during June – along with illuminating the tower – sailed through without objection.

Last week the Huntington Beach City Council voted 6-0 – with Councilmember Erik Peterson absent – to fly the flag at city hall from May 22 (the birthday of gay activist Harvey Milk) through the end of June.

Also on Tuesday night, the council voted 7-0 to approve the city’s Urban Forest Management Plan and approve the purchase of a Lenco BearCat armored vehicle for use by the police department. The estimated cost of the vehicle is $285,000.

The next meeting of the council is scheduled for May 25.
