Mariner girls to face Mater Dei

THE PACIFICA HIGH girls’ soccer team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs with a 1-0 win Friday over Newport Harbor. Mariners will face Mater Dei on Tuesday (Pexels).

The Pacifica High girls’ soccer team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals with a 1-0 win Friday over Newport Harbor.

Forward Natalie Oca scored the game-winning goal in the second half for the Mariners, who are now 13-2-1. On Tuesday they will host Mater Dei (11-1) at 3 p.m. The Monarchs advanced via a 4-0 win over Huntington Beach (9-10-1).

Pacifica was the only local survivor of the second round. Santiago lost 2-1 to Western Christian in Division 5 play, Ocean View lost 3-2 to San Dimas in D-4 action and Bolsa Grande was edged 1-0 by Cate in a Division 6 game.

Volleyball action starts on Tuesday

The CIF-SS Boys Volleyball Playoffs will start on Tuesday. Three area teams are seeded in their divisions and stand a good chance of competing for the title.

In Division 2, Huntington Beach (9-4) is seeded second, behind Santa Barbara (9-0). In Division 4, Marina (5-5) is seeded first and in Division 5, La Quinta (8-0) is seeded second.

Unseeded but ranked in the final poll is Orange, rated seventh in Division 6.

Here are first round pairings involving local teams.

Division 2

  • Huntington Beach (9-4-0) at Downey (8-3-0)

Division 3

  • Bolsa Grande (4-4-0) at Foothill (16-2-0)

Division 4

  • San Gabriel (7-1-0) at Marina (5-5-0)
  • San Gabriel Academy (8-6-0) at Garden Grove (13-6)

Division 5

  • Orange Vista (8-2-0) at Rancho Alamitos (7-2)
  • Winner of the B wild card game on Monday (Norte Vista vs. Chino Hills) at La Quinta (8-0-0)

Division 6

  • Orange (7-4-0) is in a wild card game Monday vs. Moreno Valley (4-5). If the Panthers win, they’ll play Valley View (12-0-0) in a first round game on Tuesday.
