Pacifica, the sole local survivor of the CIF-SS girls’ soccer tournament, advanced to the semifinals with a penalty kick win over Mater Dei on Tuesday on the Mariner home pitch.
The teams were deadlocked 1-1 in regular time of the Division 1 quarterfinal contest. Two overtimes were scoreless and the game was only settled when Lisbeth Deloera nailed the final penalty kick for the Mariners (14-2-1). Averee Campos scored the PHS goal in regular time, and Riley Westlund starred in goal.
Pacifica will now travel to play Villa Park on Saturday. The Spartans (15-0-3) defeated Upland 1-0.
Four boys’ v-ball teams advance
A quartet of area high school boys’ volleyball teams won in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs on Tuesday and advanced to the second round on Thursday.
In Division 2, Huntington Beach defeated Downey 3-0 and will host Thousand Oaks on Saturday. In Division 3, Bolsa Grande lost 3-0 to Foothill. In Division 4, Marina defeated San Gabriel 3-0 and will visit Redlands. Garden Grove bested San Gabriel Academy 3-1 and will visit Villa Park.
In Division 3, Rancho Alamitos beat Orange Vista 3-0 and will host Sunny Hills. Division 6 play starts on Thursday with Orange playing Valley Vista.
