A Costa Mesa couple has been arrested in connection with a “road rage” incident that took the life of a 6-year-old boy riding in a car on the Costa Mesa (55) Freeway in Orange two weeks ago.
According to the California Highway Patrol, arrested on Sunday were Marcus Anthony Eriz, 24, and Wynne Lee, 23. They were taken into custody at their home in Costa Mesa. They are each being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $1 million in bail. They are scheduled to be in court on Tuesday.
Specific charges will be filed then. “We’re in the process of evaluating the evidence so it would be unfair and potentially prejudicial to put out charges we don’t eventually file,” said Todd Spitzer, Orange County District Attorney, on Monday.
Authorities believe have recovered the firearm and car they believe were used in the shooting.
On May 21 around 8 a.m. Joanna Cloonan was driving her car northbound on the freeway when her vehicle was “cut off” by another car. According to published reports, she made a gesture that was answered by gunfire. Several shots were fired at her vehicle, and at least one bullet struck her son – Aiden Leos – who was sitting in a child’s seat in the right rear passenger’s position.
A reward of $500,000 was offered for any information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the killers.
