Topper memorial concert set

GREG TOPPER and his music will be celebrated in a memorial concert on Aug. 27 at the Garden Grove Elks.

A memorial concert honoring musician Greg Topper is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 7 at the Garden Grove Elks Lodge (Trask Avenue and Newhope Street) from 5-8 p.m.  Musical artists in attendance will include Paul Williams and Bill Medley. Donations of $20 to $40 are “strongly requested.” Contact Mary Nicoll at (714) 743-5663 (text).

Topper passed away in 2019 at the age of 73. He performed as a singer and pianist performing all over Orange County in venues large and small and is said to have played his music live for more OC residents  than any other artists.

He specialized in early rock and roll hits by Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley and other pioneers of the genre.

The honors continue to roll out for local residents completing their spring terms at colleges and universities.

Named to the Dean’s List at Siena College in Loudonville, New York are:

  • Anna Borton of Huntington Beach
  • Rami Ghanem of Huntington Beach
  • Kaitlyn Govea of Garden Grove.

Graduating from Emerson College in Boston was:

  • Andrew Geiger of Huntington Beach, who received a B.S. degree in sports communications.

Winner of the Theodore K. Steele Scholarship at New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, New York is:

  • Sara Hussin of Westminster.

At Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts:

  • Priscilla Ahn of Garden Grove received a master of science degree in geographic information science.

SteelCraft, an outdoor urban eatery in Garden Grove, is rolling out its Summer Culture Series on Saturday, July 24  with a celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Culture from 12-8 p.m. SteelCraft is located on Euclid Street north of Garden Grove Boulevard.

Santa Maria Style BBQ will be on the menu on Saturday, July 17 at the Garden Grove Elks Lodge (Newhope and Trask). It’s a drive-up order operation with a choice of tri tip, chicken or ribs with sides for $15 or a combo plate with three meats, sausage with sides for $20. Baked goods are also available for purchase from Emblem Club 279. The event goes from 11 a.m. until it’s all sold out. Eat in the park or take out.

A Summer Clothing Drive for St. Columban School in Garden Grove is scheduling a fundraiser drop-off day on Saturday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Needed are gently-used clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, backpacks, towels, sheets, blankets and curtains. Recycled clothing will be sent to residents of a Third World nation. Please use only large (13 gallon or larger) size trash bags. Drop off items in front of the school office, by the flagpole. The school is located on Stanford Avenue between Nelson and Main streets. All proceeds go to the school.

The Rose Center Theater in Westminster is open again for live performances. “The Music Man” musical opened Friday and Saturday and shows are scheduled for Saturday, July 17 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 18 at 2 p.m. Advance tickets are required. Go to www.rosecentertheater.com .
