New cases cross the 1,000 mark

The count of new coronavirus cases in Orange County continues to rise rapidly, as Friday’s total surpassed 1,000.

According to the county health care agency, the latest tally is at 1,108, a big jump from 777 the day before. Deaths declined from three to two, but hospitalizations increased to 454 from 409.

Patients being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care units went from 69 to 71.

To date, the OCHCA has counted 269,016 cases of coronavirus, of which 252,473 are considered recovered. Deaths are at 5,148.

Across the United States, new cases – across a 14-day period – have risen by 119 percent and deaths by 74 percent, according to The New York Times. In California, cases are up 94 percent, and deaths by 47 percent, reports the Los Angeles Times.
