Two bicycle riders were struck and injured – one of them fatally – in a traffic accident Sunday morning in Huntington Beach.
According to Jennifer Carey, public information officer for the HBPD, the incident took place around 8:50 a.m. near the intersection of Magnolia Street and Hamilton Avenue, involving a tandem bicycle and a 2005 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle.
Arriving officers found the riders in the roadway with injuries. They were a 74-year-old man and his 82-year-old wife. Both were taken to a local hospital where the husband succumbed to his injuries. The wife is hospitalized and expected to survive.
The driver of the Explorer, a 30-year-old Garden Grove woman, remained at the scene and cooperated with officers. Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the collision.
Police believe the bicycle riders were headed northbound on Magnolia Street entering the intersection when they were struck by the SUV as it moved westbound on Hamilton Avenue.
An investigation is ongoing. Anyone who may have seen the collision or events preceding it are asked to contact HBPD traffic investigators at (714) 536-5670 or (714) 536-5231.
