A motorcycle passenger is dead and the driver hospitalized after an accident Saturday night on Pacific Coast Highway in Huntington Beach.
According to Jennifer Carey, public information officer for the HBPD, the incident took place after 8:15 p.m. on PCH south of Warner Avenue, a crash between a Harley Davidson Street Bob and a Mazda CX-5.
Arriving officers found the motorcycle passenger, identified as Meghan Wautlet, 22, of Huntington Beach, dead at the scene. The driver, John Murray III, 21, of Huntington Beach, was found in the roadway with “significant injuries.” He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.
The driver of the Mazda, a 41-year-old woman from Beaumont, stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. Drugs or alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the incident.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the Harley was traveling south on PCH “at a high rate of speed” just as the Mazda was completing a legal U-turn from northbound lanes to southbound. The motorcycle then struck the car.
HBPD is continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone who witnessed the accident or events leading up to it is asked to call traffic investigators at (714) 536-5670 or (714) 536-5231.
