THE WESTMINSTER PLANNING COMMISSION approved a 55-foot high electronic building at its meeting on Wednesday night (Shutterstock).

A request to build and operate a digital display billboard facing the San Diego (405) Freeway in Westminster was approved by the city planning commission Wednesday evening.

The billboard will be located at 7130 Fenwick Lane, which is located northeast of Bolsa Avenue and Goldenwest Street, near Westminster Mall.

The applicant, Outdoor Associates, LLC, received a conditional use permit and a variance on a 4-0 vote, with one commissioner absent. The billboard will be V-shaped, with both sides facing the freeway. The variance was necessary because the device will have a 55-foot height, and the city code puts a 35-foot height limit on billboards.

Also approved on a 4-0 vote is a text amendment that would allow homes with an accessory dwelling unit or junior accessory unit to expand driveways an additional five feet in width to create three off-street parking places.

The action is to recommend the amendment to the city council for final approval.
