ARTIST’S RENDERING of the proposed Plaza Plan for Main Street in downtown Huntington Beach (City of Huntington Beach).
By Zia Zografos
Huntington Beach may be redesigning Main Street by adding an outdoor community plaza complete with restaurant dining, seating, art, and lighting.
Main Street’s redesign is intended to better connect the pier, downtown, and residential areas for a more cohesive and inviting atmosphere. The city is also focusing on visual enhancements like murals and colorful crosswalks as a way of blending the pier into the urban plaza.
The city council will discuss redesign ideas at the meeting Tuesday (set to begin at 6 p.m.) , and consider having staff assess the best proposals in order to start preparing paperwork for construction. The council will also vote on whether to extend the temporary partial closure of Main Street for the redesign evaluation.
Another item to be discussed is the approval of redesigning Edison Community Park. New tennis and basketball courts, expanded restrooms, and an enclosed dog area are amongst the many proposed improvements for the park.
The city council meeting will be in-person and broadcast via webinar, and will be open for public comment.
