New case count shows drop

The count of confirmed new Orange County coronavirus cases in Wednesday’s report declined from Tuesday’s record high.

According to the county health care agency, new cases totaled 4,646, down from the previous day’s total of 5,930. The other three major categories showed increases, however.

Deaths rose from two to four, and hospitalizations jumped from 614 to 673. The number of people being treated in intensive care units for COVID-19 increased from 110 to 116.

So far, Orange County has had 362,166 coronavirus cases, of which 311,108 are considered recovered. Deaths are counted at 5,901.

Nationally, new cases – believed to be driven by the Omicron variant of the virus – are up by 254 percent, according to The New York Times. That’s over a 14-day stretch. Deaths have declined by 3 percent.

In California, cases have risen 502 percent over a similar period, while deaths are down 13 percent, according to Los Angeles Times.
