Marina High’s boys’ basketball team won an early test of strength Wednesday night by defeating Corona del Mar 58-54 in a Surf League contest.
The win moves the Vikings into first place in the league and gives them a victory over the team considered most likely to be their rival for the title.
Senior guard Eric Hodgkins had 14 points for the winners, as did power forward Kenji Duremedes.
Marina is now 2-0 in league and 16-6 overall. Corona del Mar is 1-1 and 17-2. The Vikes and Sea Kings will face off again on Feb. 3 in the final Wave League game of the season.
Cavaliers best the Matadors
In a showdown for the Garden Grove League boys’ lead, Santiago defeated Bolsa Grande 48-35 on Wednesday. The Cavaliers are 4-0 in GGL play and 14-8 overall. The Matadors fell to 3-1 and10-7.
Chargers charge into first
With a 57-47 win over Los Alamitos in the Griffins’ gym on Wednesday, Edison’s boy’s basketball team moved into first place in the Surf League.
The green-and-gold are now 2-0 in league and 18-3 overall; the Griffs are 2-1 and 14-6.
Cavaliers are on a roll
The Santiago High girls’ basketball team continues to top the Garden Grove League race, posting a 57-4 win over Bolsa Grande on Wednesday. The Cavs (4-0 in league and 12-7 overall) led 38-0 at halftime.
