Julio Urias was back in 2021 form as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Padres 6-1 in San Diego Friday night. He worked five innings of two-hit ball, yielding just one run. He struck out six batters and walked three as the Blue Crew improved to 10-3 and remained in first place in the National League West.
The Padres fell to 9-6 and fourth place in the NLWest.
Max Muncy had three RBIs for LA, including a fifth inning home run. Mookie Betts added a homer and drove in two runs.
The two teams will resume their series on Saturday at 5:40 p.m. Tyler Anderson (1-0) is expected to get the start for the Dodgers.
Angels fall to the Orioles
The Los Angeles Angels dropped into a first place tie in the American League West with the Seattle Mariners by losing 5-3 to the Baltimore Orioles Friday night in Anaheim. Both teams are 8-6.
After falling behind 5-0 early, the Halos rallied but could not catch the visitors (5-9). Taylor Ward continued his hot spring start with two hits, improving his batting average to .348. Anthony Rendon homered and drove in two runs.
In his return to the lineup, Mike Trout went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a strikeout.
Noah Syndergaard (2-0) will make the start for the Angels Saturday in the series’ second game at 6:07 p.m.
Seahawks blast four HRs in win
Landon Runyan hit two home runs – one of four slammed by the Seahawks as the Ocean View baseball team defeated Katella 11-2 and remained unbeaten.
The winners are 17-7 overall and 8-0 in Golden West League play. That keeps them on course for a collision with Segerstrom (8-0, 4-11-1) next week. They’ll settle the league title on Tuesday and Thursday next week in the climactic final two games of the regular season.
In Garden Grove League baseball, Los Amigos and Santiago remained one-two in the race after wins Friday afternoon. The Lobos (10-3 in league) defeated La Quinta 3-0 and Santiago (9-4) beat Rancho Alamitos 14-2.

In Best of the West softball on Friday, Huntington Beach won two games, defeating Golden Valley 12-3 and Lompoc 7-3. The Oilers are now 19-6 and have won 10 games in a row.
Also on Friday, La Quinta (12-5, overall, 4-4 in league) defended its position in third place in the Garden Grove League with a 17-6 rout of Bolsa Grande. The Aztecs got a strong outing from Neveah Gomez, who struck out seven batters as well as stealing two bases and driving in three runs with a double and a triple.
Ella Magga went 2-for2 with a triple, stole three bases, drove in four runs and scored three times. Karen Dam added two triples, scored twice and drove in one run.
The week’s biggest upset in softball came on Thursday as Kennedy scored seven runs in the eighth inning to defeat Pacifica – the county’s top-ranked team – 9-2 at the Marina diamond. The M’s and Fighting Irish are now tied at 7-1 at the top of the Empire League with one week – two games – to play.
