In the aftermath of a coyote attack on a young child near the pier in Huntington Beach Thursday night, police located and shot two such animals.

One was found dead in the sand about a mile north of the pier on Friday morning and the other was spotted Friday afternoon under a mobile home and was euthanized, according to Capt. Patrick Foy of the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Officials will check the animals for rabies and will try to determine if their DNA matches to the attack, he said.

The girl was with two women and another small child sitting near the waves when she wandered “a mere few feet“ and was “attacked,” said Foy.

In Thursday’s incident, the coyote came out of the dark, hit and knocked over the girl and attacked her for 12 seconds before her cry alerted adults and the animal ran off, Foy said. She received serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital, authorities said.

However, the animal stayed around, pacing, before finally fleeing.

The family did nothing to antagonize the coyote, he added.
