A bipartisan deal on a new gun control law has been reached in the U.S. Senate.
According to The Associated Press, the agreement is considered “modest” but will nevertheless be signed into law by President Joe Biden.
The new legislation “does not do everything that I think is needed, but it reflects important steps in the right direction and would be the most significant gun safety legislation to pass Congress in decades,” said Biden.
According to The New York Times, the new law would:
- enhance background checks to keep juveniles and mental health patients from buying guns
- extend to dating partners a ban on domestic abusers having firearms
- provide funds for states that want to enact “red flag” laws that allow the temporary confiscation of guns from people considered to be dangerous
- provide funding for mental health efforts and improve school safety.
Russians take down two bridges
In an attempt to isolate Sievierodonestsk in eastern Ukraine, invading Russian forces have destroyed two of the three bridges into the city.
According to United Press International, Russian artillery is now targeting the third span and the invaders are concentrating their forces in what could be a final push to capture the city.
The city is a major metropolitan area in a part of Ukraine with many Russian-speaking residents and the area has been subject to struggle between pro-Moscow rebels and the national Ukrainian army since at least 2014
“The next two or three days will be significant,” said a Ukrainian military leader.
Sports: Now, its the Dodgers’ turn …
It’s not quite fair to compare the sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers over the weekend by the San Francisco Giants to what befell the Los Angeles Angels with their 14-game losing streak.
However, after the Blue Crew lost 2-0 on Sunday, the team scored only four runs in three games against their in-state rivals, losing three games in a row. Thanks to a 4-2 win by the Colorado Rockies over the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers (37-23) remained a half-game ahead in the National League West race.
In Anaheim, the Los Angeles Angels lost 4-1 to the New York Mets. The Halos (29-33) fell into third place in the American League West with the loss, a half-game behind the Texas Rangers (28-31) and one game ahead of the fourth place Seattle Mariners (27-33).
