Drone crashes Russian party

A DRONE blew up the headquarters Sunday of the Russian Navy on the Black Sea (Shutterstock).

In a particularly embarrassing incident on Sunday, the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was blown up by a device carried on a drone. Six people were reported killed.

The attack stopped planned ceremonies honoring the Russian Navy.  No one has claimed credit for the attack, called a “terrorist act” by Russian authorities.

According to The Associated Press, the Ukrainian government mocked Russian forces who control the Crimean Peninsula where the attack took place.

“Did the occupiers admit the helplessness of their air defense system?” said an an adviser to Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Flood toll reaches 28 in Kentucky

The count of those who have died in the flooding eastern Kentucky has reached 28.

United Press International reports that Gov. Andy Beshear updated the toll Sunday evening. Additional bodies are expected to be recovered as relief efforts progress.

More heavy rains are expected late Sunday night and Monday in central and eastern Kentucky.

Also in the news … Bill Russell, the Boston Celtics star who led his team to 11 NBA titles, had died at the age of 88 … Nichelle Nichols, who starred as Lt. Uhura  in the original “Star Trek” TV series and movies, has died at the age of 89 ….

Sports: Dodgers win, Angels lose …

The two area Major League Baseball teams continued to go their separate ways on Sunday. The Los Angeles Dodgers (68-63) defeated the Colorado Rockies 7-3 while the Los Angeles Angels (43-59) lost 5-2 to the Texas Rangers at the Big A.

For the Angels, it was a familiar story. Starter Reid Demters pitched well, working seven innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run. But the bullpen gave up three runs in the ninth and sent the Halos down to their third loss in four games against Texas.

For the Blue Crew it was their fourth win in five games. Tony Gonsolin improved his record to 12-1 despite a somewhat rough start. He went five innings, yielding five hits and three earned runs. He struck out six batters and walked one. Freddie Freeman had three hits for the Dodgers as did James Outman, who homered and drove in three runs.

Weather: Eighties, eighties, eighties …

According to forecasters, the West Orange County area will have daytime highs in the 80s right through the middle of August.  Monday should be mostly sunny with a high of 85 with an overnight low of 67.  Tuesday will be slightly cooler at 84 (67) and Wednesday cooler yet at 80 (67) before beginning to rise to 82 (67) on Thursday.
