Cavaliers, Pioneers post wins

A light Thursday night high school football menu showed Western and Santiago posting big wins and Pacifica and Garden Grove taking losses.

Santiago (now 4-1) defeated Anaheim (0-5) 32-6 at Monsoor Stadium as Art Martinez rushed for 91 yards on 15 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Western (now 4-1) knocked Garden Grove (4-1) out of the unbeaten ranks with a 34-7 victory at Handel Stadium.

Pacifica (1-4) continued a tough rebuilding season with a 28-14 loss to Banning High (3-3) of Wilmington at Bolsa Stadium. Noah Salas passed for two touchdowns for the Mariners, one to Hudson Stern and one to David Carlsson.

League play starts next week for most schools. Western will visit Century on Sept. 30 in the Orange League. Santiago will host Bolsa Grande next Friday in Garden Grove League action and Pacifica starts Empire League play hosting Valencia that night.

Garden Grove will continue its pre-league schedule next Thursday (Sept. 29) hosting Godinez Fundamental of Santa Ana. Big Four League play won’t start for the Argonauts until Friday, Oct. 14 when they visit Segerstrom.
