Panthers, Cavs, Lobos get wins

The Orange High Panthers set up a potential Oct. 28 showdown for the Orange Coast League football title against the Santa Ana High Saints with a 46-7 win over Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana on Thursday night at Fred Kelly Stadium.

With the win, the orange-and-black are 5-2 overall and 3-0 in league. The Saints, who will play Costa Mesa on Friday, are 5-2 overall and 3-0 in league.

Orange, employing a big-play attack – including an 80-yard touchdown dash by Kobe Boykin – rolled up a 40-0 half-time lead.

In other action on Thursday night, Western blanked Magnolia 56-0 in an Orange League game. The Pioneers are now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Sentinels fell to 0-8 and 0-3 in league.

In the Garden Grove League, Santiago and Los Amigos each scored big wins that keep their title and playoff hopes alive.

The Cavaliers (now 5-2, 1-1) defeated La Quinta (4-3, 0-2) as Daniel Gonzalez passed for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Daniel Padilla rushed for 83 yards and one score and had 55 yards receiving.

The Lobos (5-2, 1-1) rallied for 20 points in the fourth quarter to pull away and defeat Loara (3-4, 1-1) at Monsoor Stadium by 34-14.

The Edison-Newport Harbor game is scheduled for Friday night.
