Three convicted in kidnap plot

THREE PEOPLE were convicted Wednesday in a plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer (Shutterstock).

A plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer in hopes of triggering a civil war led to the conviction Wednesday of three men for supplying “material support” to a terrorist act.

According to the Associated Press, Joe Morrison, Pete Musico and Paul Bellar were convicted of all charges, s including a gun crime and membership in a gang. They will continue to be held in jail until sentencing on Dec. 15. The maximum sentence would be 42 years in prison.

The group, which called itself the Wolverine Watchmen, was motivated in part by COVID-19 restrictions that came from the governor’s office.

Democrats’ chances in Senate slip

The FiveThirtyEight polling analysis site now projects that Democrats have a 54 percent chance of retaining control of the U.S. Senate in the Nov. 8 general election. That’s down from 70 percent two weeks ago.

Republicans are considered to have an 81 percent chance of retaking the House of Representatives.

Also in the news … Elon Musk, seeking to complete his purchase of Twitter, showed up at the company headquarters on Wednesday carrying a porcelain sink and tweeted, “Let that sink in,” according to USA Today.

Sports: Lakers lose fourth straight

The Los Angeles Lakers went down to their fourth straight defeat Wednesday night, losing 110-99 to the Nuggets in Denver.

Anthony Davis lead the team with 22 points, followed by LeBron James with 19 and Lonnie Walker with 15. For he Nuggets, the top scorer was Nikola Jokic with 31.

Now 0-4 on the young season, the Lakers will try again on Friday in Minneapolis against the Timberwolves.

The Anaheim Ducks lost 4-2 to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Honda Center. Their record is now 1-5-1. Scoring goals for the Ducks were Troy Terry and Trevor Zegras.

Weather: Nice and fall-like

West Orange County enjoys great summers, but autumn can be pretty nice, too. The National Weather Service calls for pleasant days right through the weekend. The forecast for Thursday is sunny with a daytime high of 74 and an overnight low of 56. Friday will be similar at 75 (56). Saturday is expected to warm to 78 (57) and Sunday is almost the same at 78 (59).
