Orangewood Academy may be a small school by comparison to the public schools that surround it.
But the private institution at the eastern edge of Garden Grove often punches above its weight in athletics, especially in basketball .where its teams have turned into CIF-SS powerhouses.
In recent years, Orangewood has won five girls’ CIF-SS basketball titles, the most recent in 2020. The boys team has one CIF-SS basketball crown. Both programs have also qualified for state playoffs.
Not to be undone, the girls’ volleyball team has won five CIF-SS championship plaques.
Overall, the Spartans have won 18 league championships in various sports.
As evidence of the Spartan’s prowess, both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams are ranked at the top of this week’s High 5, which rates the most successful prephoops’ teams in The Tribune’s coverage area of Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster.
Records are as of Monday night’s results.
The Spartan girls (10-2) are first, followed by Ocean View (11-2),
Santiago (6-4), Orange (9-2) and Pacifica (7-6).
On the boys’ side, Orangewood (10-3) is also the leader, followed by Marina (9-4), Huntington Beach (8-6), Orange (9-3) and Loara (6-6).
So far, these records reflect non-league and tournament games. League play will begin after the new year.
