A registered sex offender was arrested Wednesday after allegedly assaulting a victim in Garden Grove.

According to Detective Sgt. Mark Lord of the GGPD Crimes Against Persons Unit, the incident took place around 9:09 a.m. in the 11200 block of Magnolia Street (between Orangewood and Katella avenues).

A person was walking in the area when approached from behind by the suspect, who assaulted the victim, say police. The suspect fled with the victim giving chase, eventually catching up with his attacker and “a confrontation ensued.”

The suspect fled again and could not be located at first, but police determined him to be Jerry Matilde, 25, of Garden Grove, a registered sex offender on probation who is required to wear an ankle GPS.

GGPD officers and detectives were able to locate Matilde in Huntington Beach and make the arrest. He was booked into Orange County Jail in Santa Ana on a sexual battery charge.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or with other information about it is asked to contact Detective Rogers at (714) 741-5413 or GGPD Investigations at (714) 741-5800.
