U.S. spy efforts aid Ukraine

The U.S. government’s assistance to the Ukraine military extends beyond just new weapons and ammunition.

According to The New York Times, leaked Pentagon documents now circulating on social media show how American intelligence efforts have allowed the U.S. to alert the Ukrainians  about planned strikes and their targets.

Those documents show the Russian war machine in disarray and plagued by shortages of ammunition.

The secret documents also indicate that the U.S. is conducting intelligence surveillance – spying – on Ukraine’s military as well.

Nuclear sub sent to Middle East

A U.S. nuclear submarine has been dispatched to the Middle East as tensions rise with Iran.

United Press International reports that the U.S. Navy has revealed that the USS Florida, armed with cruise missiles, traveled though the Suez Canal on its way to the Red Sea.

There’s been an exchange of small arms fire between American forces and Iranian-backed militia in the area recently.

Also in the news … The Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia has been suspended for at least a day because of rain. Golfing legend Tiger Woods is last place with a score of nine over par.

Sports: Angels beat Blue Jays/ Dodgers fall

The Los Angeles Angels rallied to defeat the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday in Anaheim 9-5 and take over sole possession of first place in the American League West with a 5-3 record.

After trailing 4-1 at one point, the Halos rallied to within 5-3 when Mike Trout hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to give the Orange County team the lead at 7-5.

Hunter Renfroe hit a two-run insurance home run in the eighth to seal the win. The win went to Jaime Barria (1-0) in relief for pitching one perfect inning.

The Angels will take on the Jays again on Sunday with Reid Detmers getting the start for the home team.

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost 12-4 to the Arizona Diamondbacks in  Phoenix as the home team rallied for five runs in the sixth and seventh innings. With the loss, the Blue Crew is 5-4 and in a three-way tie with the D-backs and San Diego Padres for first in the NL West.

The Los Angeles Kings lost 4-3 to the Colorado Avalanche.

The Anaheim Ducks lost 5-4 to the Arizona Coyotes in overtime. They are now 23-45-11, good for 45 points and last place in the NHL Pacific Division.

The Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Portland Trailblazers 136-125 at home.

The Clips, now 43-38, were led in scoring by Kawhi Leonard with 27 points and Norman Powell added 23 more.

Weather: Some fog, some sun

The West Orange County area is due for a mix of fog and sun.  Sunday should begin with patchy fog followed by sun.The daytime high is 75 with an overnight low of 54. Monday will be a similar but a bit warmer. Fog will be  followed by sun. The high is expected to be 77 with a low of 53. Tuesday follows the pattern with fog, then sun with a high of 75 (54).
