Seven-year sentence for rioter

A sentence of more than seven years in federal prison was imposed Saturday on a man convicted of taking a riot shield and crushing a police officerinto a door frame during the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol building.

According to the Associated Press, Patrick McCaughey III will serve seven years and six months in prison, with two years of supervised release.

The Department of Justice recommended a sentence of 15 years and eight months, but Judge Trevor McFadden imposed the shorter term o imprisonment.

Another convicted rioter, Logan James Barnhart – a onetime model for romance novel covers – was sentenced to 36 months in prison and 36 months of supervised release after pleading guilty to assaulting police officers, according to United Press International.

Also in the news … A Russian missile strike that hit the Ukrainian city of Sloviansk killed at least 11 people and wounded 22 others, according to USA Today.

Civil war breaks out in Sudan

The Sudanese Army and a powerful paramilitary group are fighting in the capital city of Khartoum.  According to The New York Times, at least 30 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in the fighting.

It’s unclear which group – if any – has managed to take control of the government. The fighting, which is not confined now to Khartoum, is taking place during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Sports: Angels lose; Dodgers rally to win

Defensive miscues by the Los Angeles Angels again figured in a loss against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday. The Halos had two errors – catcher interference calls – in losing 9-7 at Fenway Park. The loss dropped their record to 7-7, good for second place in the American League West.

Mike Trout went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a walk and two runs scored.

The Los Angeles Dodgers managed only two hits in the first eight innings against the Chicago Cubs, but rallied in the bottom of the ninth. David Peralta’s pinch hit single with two out brought in the winning run as the Blue Crew prevailed 2-1.

The team is now 8-7 and tied for first place.a  in the National League West.

Weather: Mostly it’s both sunny and cloudy

The forecast for the West Orange County area calls for a bit of both. Sunday should be mostly sunny with a daytime high of 71 with an overnight low of 53. On Monday, partly cloudy conditions take over with a high of 71 (53). Tuesday will be similar but slightly cooler at 67 (52). Mostly sunny skies will return on Wednesday with a high of 68 (52).
