Texas and 10 Commandments

The Texas state Senate this week approved a bill that would require that all public schools prominently display the Ten Commandments in each classroom starting next fall.

According to United Press International, the bill now heads to the Texas House of Representatives . The state already has a law requiring schools to display signs that read “In God We Trust.”

Another bill passed the Texas Senate requiring every public school to allocate time for students and school employees to read the Bible or other religious books and to say prayers.

Evacuations from Sudan surge

As a civil war rages in the African nation of Sudan, thousand of foreigners are fleeing the country.

According to reuters.com, thousands of people – including diplomats, businesspeople and others – are seeking escape from the capital city of Khartoum where urban warfare is raging between government forces and a paramilitary forces.

The United Nations has been asking for a cease-fire to allow non-combatants to reach safety, but without success.

Sports: Dodgers bounce back big

After an embarrassing 13-0 almost no-hit loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers shook that off and beat the Cubs 9-4 in the Windy City.

Rookie James Outman hit two home runs and batted 4-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Max Muncy also homered and drove in three runs.

Dustin May (2-1) got the win, working 5.1 innings and giving up just two hits and two earned runs. He walked three and struck out four.

The win put the Blue Crew at 11-11 and in second place in the National League West.

The Los Angeles Angels collected 12 hits and four home runs, Saturday night, but a bullpen collapse cost the Halos as they lost 11-8 to the Kansas City Royals in Anaheim.

LAA led 8-6 going into the top of the ninth, but reliever Jose Quijada gave up five runs. With the loss, the Angels are 10-11 and slipped into third place in the American League West.

  • In the NBA Western Conference playoffs, the Phoenix Suns took a 3-1 lead with a 112-110 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. Russell Westbrook scored 37 points for the Clips`
  • The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 111-101 on Saturday to take a 2-1 lead in their NBA Western Conference playoff series. Anthony Davis scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Lakers, and LeBron Davis added 25 points. Game Four will be on Monday at 7 p.m. (Pacific time).

Weather: Mild weather in forecast

The West Orange County area should enjoy mild weather for the next few days. Sunday is predicted to be sunny with a daytime high of 75 and an overnight low of 57. Monday will be a bit cooler at 71 (58) with mostly sunny skies. Partly cloudy conditions will be in place through the end of the coming week, with daytime temperatures rising as high as 79.
